West Franklin Men’s Shed

September 1st, 2009 by Donald Pettitt

The West Franklin Community Mens Shed Trust is actively involved with the health and well being of men in the community. We currently have 45 subscribed members and 168 occasional users of the facility. The Counties Manukau Area Health Board is now referring more disabled persons to our establishment for active participation in Community projects and the Middlemore Hospitable Mental Health Agency has started bringing men suffering from Azheimers to us for practical instruction and peer association. The Shed was established 01/02/2008 for the health and well being of men in the community by providing a workshop and meeting facilities so that men of all ages could associate with each other in a friendly environment and do what men do in their sheds. Hey there people in Pukeoware –
(I grew up in Waiuku, many moons ago. My father was born in Pukeoware – small world.)
I am most interested in how you set up the men’s shed there and how its all going…
How is/was it funded and given just this short blurb sounds like some great achievements already. How is for you that the DHB is recommending disabled? What does that mean for you in terms of coordination etc.
Be MOST interested to talk to you, as we would love to set one up here.
    cheers

Are you intouch with Ailsa Carey of REAP?
She is setting up a shed in Nelson as well as running the Picton Shed.
    You two need to talk!

Several years ago New Zealand Steel Mining Ltd ( Kawhia ) donated two diesel engines to a society in Franklin. Records have been lost of the name and contacts of that group of people and we are now trying to track them down. Possibly it was your organisation.
The reason is that there is now a quantity of spares that have become redundant and these could be made available.
The engines concerned are Blackstone 8 cylinder.
