Greetings all,
presently a steering group of four is preparing, on behalf of sheds already established, an inaugural conference of men's sheds in Masterton from April 9-11th. This conference has principally been organised to assist new sheds through establishment options, to provide a network of sheds for members to support and visit each other, to prevent unnecessary duplication, to learn collectively as we combine our energies, expertise and experience to seek solutions to problems and to achieve new goals and break new ground. The Masterton shed has shown what is possible to achieve and we would like to share their story along with your stories at this conference.
There are some critical areas we all need good information about, Insurance, Public Liability, Safety in the Shed, First Aid, and we need to find the best ways to sustainably fund sheds and their activities. It is important to have local and national government representatives aware of concerns we have and how these concerns can be best addressed in the community.

The theme "Let the Shedding Begin" has at least four foci; awareness raising for the wider community, including local and national politicians, inspirational stories of the benefits of shedding for individuals and communities, tools and ideas to equip shed advocates grow the physical shed presence in each community, and discussion about the formation of a National Association that can advocate and promote the positive values that emerge from the Community Men's Shed model.

There will be other things to emerge - new friendships, enjoyment, learning, humour, contacts and projects. And what about health, wellbeing and innovation?

You all have so much to offer and if you wish to join in this conference - please contact Peter McNeur peter.mcneur@waireap.org.nz
for more information

Cheers
Neil

G'day!

I'm surprised at your scanty knowledge of other Sheds in New Zealand.

Naenae Menz Shed has been up and running since February 2009. There is movement toward establishing another Shed at Johnsonville. Haining Street in Wellington has its own Shed, with an enthusiastic membership.
Work is in progress to establish a Shed in Newtown, how far this has progressed is not known.

Another Shed in the area is Wainuiomata Mens Shed still very much in its formative stages and having some problems with its security of tenure on the old Wainuiomata College site.

At Masterton their Mens Shed is up and running in sumptuous circumstances compared to many of the other Sheds.

Tom Lynch is active with organising the Wanaka Blokes Shed. Phil Bradshaw is instrumental in the running of Taieri Blokes Shed and has been busy establishing a further Shed in Dunedin City.

Ailsa Carey has been a guiding light in the establishment of the Picton Men's Community Shed, which is also up and running and making its mark on the Picton scene.

Naenae has hosted visits from severalpeople involved with the Shed movement, namely Phil Bradshaw of Taieri and Graeme Ennor of Mokoia Community Centre at Rotorua, who was interested in establishing a Shed in Rotorua. As well as a group from the embryo Wainuiomata Shed.

We, at Naenae have been guilty of actually visiting other sheds and offering advice and encouragement. We see a need for closer co-operation between Sheds, and our door is open every Wednesday morning for visits from other Sheds around the country. Do join us for a cuppa and a chat!

I have already pestered the denizens of other Sheds around the country with emailed questions and comments. Arthur at West Franklin is well known to us and a source of valuable information in the times of the inevitable hiccups in the smooth running of the Sheds.

We have an emissary, Fred Bennett who will be in the South Island over the Christmas period and it is entirely possible that Wanaka will be graced with a visit from him during that period. Fred was a founding Trustee of our Charitable Trust but recently resigned his position, mainly due to the recent demise of his good lady, Carol.

Email contact is welcome.

Felicitations,

Peter.
